Understanding the Name At-Tawwab

Islam acknowledges the 99 names and attributes of Allah, each providing a unique insight into the nature of the Almighty. One of these profound names is At-Tawwab, which means The Acceptor of Repentance or The Continually Turning. This blog post delves into understanding the name At-Tawwab through verses of the Quran and Hadith, providing an enlightening perspective into Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

The Meaning of At-Tawwab:

At-Tawwab refers to the God who accepts repentance and continuously turns towards His creation, showing them mercy and forgiveness. This is beautifully expressed in the following hadith, proving that Allah always accepts sincere repentance

“Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: ‘Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?'” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145)

At-Tawwab in the Quran: Understanding the Name At-Tawwab

The name At-Tawwab is explicitly mentioned multiple times in the Quran, emphasizing Allah’s continuous mercy and willingness to forgive. Allah says in the Quran:

“And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah. Indeed, Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (Quran 2:115)

The Quran addresses At-Tawwab further in Surah An-Nisa (the fourth chapter):

“Indeed, Allah loves those who turn to him in repentance.” (Quran 4:22)

Moreover, the Almighty promises the believers that He will accept their repentance repeatedly, as mentioned in Surah Az-Zumar (the ninety-third chapter):

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'” (Quran 39:53)
